The conclusion of the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION series was one of the most confounding moments to be found in anime. For as many people that were exhilarated by its mystery, there were those who were just plain angry. Still, it is obvious that EVANGELION is one of the most popular, and arguably one of the best animes ever produced, and is one of the rare sci-fi series that actually follows through on the ambitious themes and ideas that it presents. That follow through is THE END OF EVANGELION, a 90 minute feature that picks up right where episode 24 (as well as DEATH & REBIRTH) of the series left off to provide, well, an end to the series. Beautiful, compelling, confusing, and provocative, THE END OF EVANGELION is all that it promises and more.

Take note

animecowboy from merseyside, 28th June, 2004

Evangelion is an action packed explosive sci-fi series. I have seen parts of the series but only this movie in full. This was my first mistake.

Although I was able to appreciate most parts of the film when looking at it from a technical viewpoint, understanding it was a different story. The end of evangelion is the concluding part of the highly complex series. No sane person will be able to draw any conclusions from this film other than it is ridiculous.

However if decide to continue watching after the first 15 minutes of name dropping and horrific violence, and you can ignore the fact you have no idea whets going on, this can be quite enjoyable. For a manga of its type it has glorious animation and likeable characters.

The dialogue is well scripted and works well in dubbed conversion. To me this film was more of an abstract piece as I was able to enjoy the visuals but working out any meaning was far beyond me. This could be my ignorance but according to a few other reviews I have read my experts the film is a bit of a mess.

The End We Should Have Had

imran from , 24th March, 2006

To those people who sat through the series only to be confronted with an ending that can only be described as truly pathetic, this is the DVD you have been waiting for. Epic, brutal, action packed, confusing (well this IS Neon Genesis Evangelion) - this rounds off the series nicely for those like me who were disgusted by the original denoument. Hats off to the makers for coming back to finish this series off in style.

Manga Lynch

Dragilex from , 5th November, 2006

What can I say. The Eva series was about kids in robot/creation machines fighting angels from space to prevent the wipe out of humankind only to discover that the 18th angel is an enemy of a different sort. Slowly over the episodes through the kiddy type anime that has been incorporated within the fighting there has been a sense that a dark secret has been hiding. Well the dark secret is secret no more and the it hits the fan in a big way. Prepare yourself for the ride of your life as all involved get stuck in something that is beyond their control. The animation in this episode is beautifully disturbing, especially spliced with the SFX and voices of the characters. Be warned. You couldn't get any more 'manga' than this.

Amazing finish to a legendary series

A Customer from Southampton, 5th May, 2009

Just to counter some of the other somewhat ignorant reviews, you have to understand that this film is essentially the final two episodes of a 26 episode television series. If you haven't watched that series (carefully) this probably won't make any sense to you. However, if you have watched all of Evangelion (and you should), you'll probably realise that this film is a brilliant end to one of the the greatest anime titles ever produced.

A psychological ending

commanderd from , 27th February, 2009

For those who wanted an all-out fight and big explosions, this has it, but then that was never what Evangelion was all about. This is what the final episode *should* have been. The final meaning of Rei, Lillith, Adam, the Evas and all the cast get their characters enhanced by this. It's brutal in places, weird in others, but does make you realise what the director was aiming for in his pieces about what it is to be human.

A Lot To Get Your Head Around

A Customer from Chippenham, 19th November, 2008

Very good movie but do not expect to understand any of it if you have not understood almost all of the series. The storytelling is not perfect in a sense that you will leave yourself filling in the gaps yourself trying to make heads or tails of what is going on. The action is minimal and, like the series, concentrates on character development. this is not your 'typical mecha' as some other reviews have stated (for one those have watched the series you would understand there is almost no mecha involved at all). Character developement and a series of complicated plots are the main theme. This is not a film for anyone who just wants to see stuff get blown up, but then again if you made it through the series (specially the director's cut version) then you will have to watch this concluding film.

Brilliant but not for everyone.

JCMoorehead from from Billingham, 1st October, 2008

End of Evangelion is a hard film to review on it's own. To fully appreciate and understand it you will have had to have seen the series Neon Genesis Evangelion. That will at least prepare you for what is within the film and also introduce you to the characters and themes present within this movie. EoE takes place after episode 24 of the series and tells the story of what happens next. You see what happens to Shinji after he kills Kaworou, what happens to Asuka after she wakes from her coma and various other characters. There are some brilliant action sequences including Asuka and her Unit 2 against several Mass Produced Evangelion Units and of course the sequence that takes up the majority of the middle of the film. In terms of Animation it's beautiful especially compared to the problems seen in the last few episodes of the series. They had a budget here and they used it. The above mentioned fight sequence, the sequences in the middle of the film left me in awe at times. In terms of the story. You need to know the series to really appreciate it otherwise you're going to be lost. It might require a few viewings to really get to grips with what is happening within the film and it is at times quite depressing. The sequences in the middle are confusing at first and may leave you scratching your head but it is not as hard to understand as people might lead you to believe. I believe it tells a touching and in the end uplifting story, the message I took from it was uplifting despite what was being seen on the screen. I would and do recomend Evangelion to everyone and count this as one of my favourite movies. However if you have not yet seen the series then I would recomend doing that first before getting the movie. It's very much a love or hate movie and Evangelion is one of those things that causes arguments in Societies and Message Boards. My main piece of advice is to try and enjoy it for what it is and forget about any hype associated with it.
