Terrible
FatherTed from Rotherham, England., 11th January, 2006
After renting many Doctor Who DVD's and enjoying them all immensely I was surprised by how much of a stinker this one was; especially as it features my favourite Doctor. There *seems* to be very little story because of the amount of sequences where The Doctor and Romana (mk II) are simply running around Paris from one scene to the next, dodging the mad French drivers and the bemused passers by. I accept the poor sets (an entire stone wall wobbles when hit by the detectives shoulder) and the terrible monster costume as part of Doctor Who folklore, but the terrible acting (particularly by the detective) and some of the bizarre circumstances (Romana and the detective sat in a cafe drinking with the cafe owner not minding that they smashed the window to get in before it was open) are unforgivable. I really like Doctor Who and I'm trying to be objective but I just can't think of anything nice to add. Sorry.

The script editor was Douglas Adams who later gave us the excellent Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and there are some moments of humour, particularly the scene with John Cleese examining a piece of art which is actually the Tardis.

Forgot how much I loved Tom Baker

Watching this again I realised how much Tom Baker was 'my ' Doctor Who. Actually he has a similar sense of humor to the current one. Thin plot, awful effects, plastic masks,I loved it!

An enjoyable romp for the Doctor, although the story is often disliked by purists who feel that Douglas Adam's script plays the story too much for laughs and is responsible for Dr Who not being taken as serious sci-fi for a while...

Docteur Qui

This is one story I vividly remember from my childhood (esp. the rubber-faced Jaggeroth). Great to see the doctor running round Paris rather than a grubby quarry. A good non-linear story too (the doctor actually uses the Tardis to move through time during the episode, which is a bit of a novelty) Nice cameo from John Cleese.
