BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF is a wild mix of martial arts, horror, and French period drama. Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan), a charming naturalist and libertine, arrives in Gevaudan with his companion, Mani (Mark Dacascos), a taciturn Mohawk Iroquois Indian with amazing fighting skills. Fronsac has been sent by the king to investigate a mysterious beast that is slaughtering women and children across the countryside. The local gentry include the friendly Marquis Thomas D'Apcher (Jérémie Rénier), Jean-François de Morangias (Vincent Cassel), a one-armed adventurer with a suspicious nature, and his beautiful sister, Marianne (Emilie Dequenne of ROSETTA). Though Fronsac is immediately attracted to Marianne, he still finds time to visit Sylvia (Monica Bellucci), a mysterious prostitute with a penchant for sharp objects. Fronsac and Mani quickly realize that the killer is not a wolf, but something bigger and far more deadly. As they attempt to track the beast, they encounter unexpected resistance from the locals, and find themselves in grave danger. BROTHERHOOD, a huge hit in France, is a uniquely entertaining film, featuring stunning fight scenes, suspense, and campy high drama. Director Christophe Gans captures it all with a visual panache few Hollywood directors can match.

Radio Times

Blending historical fact with hysterical fiction, this flamboyant fantasy from Crying Freeman director Christophe Gans attempts to give substance to France's own Loch Ness Monster legend — the fabled Beast of Gévaudan that is said to have killed over a hundred women and children between 1764 and 1767. Taking this still unexplained visceral mystery as his inspiration, Gans details how forward-thinking naturalist Samuel Le Bihan and his Iroquois blood brother Mark Dacascos are sent to Gévaudan by King Louis XV to destroy the mythical creature once and for all. There he falls for aristocratic Emilie Dequenne, quarrels with her sinister one-armed brother, Vincent Cassel, and uncovers a demonic plot to overthrow the monarchy. Often resembling an expensively produced Hammer horror with Sergio Leone's atmospheric sensibilities and Matrix-style martial arts, this Gallic version of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is an incredible visual tour de force, yet that can't obscure the hollowness at its centre.

Brotherhood of the Zzz

I actually fell asleep while watching this film. It's incredibly dull despite the potential for murderous mayhem in the French countryside. I worked out what was going on ages before the end, and none of the "wolf" scenes managed to generate any tension.

Peculiar

skeadugenga from Berks, 10th January, 2005

I rented this film on the basis of the trailer - which made it look like a really good werewolf movie with lashings of historical swash and atmosphere to it.

It starts off well and it’s visually beautiful, but the plot gradually deteriorates through the film into something totally ridiculous. When the martial arts started in earnest I gave up on the suspense movie I'd been hoping for and just detested the film for the rest of its by now interminable length.

Very disappointing.

Don't Bother-hood!

Ants from London, 30th September, 2005

What a pile of gubbins. I don't believe they could have trotted out any more cliches if they'd tried. How many slow motion images did we need to see of rain drops on puddles, wine spilling, blood shedding. There was only one slow motion fluid scene that was missing but I think it might have required a different certificate. Plot weak and predictable, acting average, the dubbing was off-putting and the noble savage ninja rubbish...pllllease, it was embarrassing! On the whole the only good thing was the scenery, then again take a stroll in the park, the scenery is fine and it'd be more enjoyable than sitting through this film.

Handsomely Spooky Period Thriller

lee k from London, UK, 12th May, 2004

Actually, I could have done with rather less of the kung-fu fightin',as this generally very good film is already a bit overlong and rather slow, but I suppose it helps sell tickets...All in all, this glossy French production putting a romantic/fantastic spin on a true story of rural mayhem is above average entertainment. It doesn't dumb down for the target audience like so many US popular films, and the production values are ace. Vincent Cassel does a grand turn as the baddie, too.

mound of the hound of the Baskervilles

Very promising start, good characters, premise and costumes but overstays it’s welcome. Feels like a re-working of The Hound of the Baskervilles. A curious distraction.

Good watch!

A Customer from Solihull, 13th February, 2010

This was recommended to me as a period mythical film which intrigued me but essentially I watched this without any preconceptions. I really enjoyed it on a basis level of easy watching with eye-candy for both sexes with the mysterious side-kick and the beautiful Monica Belushi. The story is captivating playing on both mystery and also involves political ethics which gives it added depth. All in all an enjoyable watch!

eh?

branbloke from , 23rd May, 2009

i couldnt work out whether it was meant to be a spoof or what. suffice to say that in the first hour alone there were werewolves, French aristocrats, secret societies, Iroquois Indians, martial arts, occult ceremonies, sacred mushrooms, swashbuckling, incest, psychic gypsies etc etc. As the plot became more and more mental I just started to lose interest. The acting is really wooden, the monster when it (finally) appears is laughable and when one of the prossies from the local brothel turns out to be a spy from the Vatican (just think about that for a second) it all just became too much. Oh yeah, everyone fights like Jackie Chan as well. I didnt make it to the end.

OMG Awful!

Sammy1973 from , 12th May, 2009

This film is long, boring and pointless! It is of similar vain to 'Sleepy Hollow' and 'The Village' but extremely drawn out and the plot is so obvious you know who the villan is almost immediately. There are no exciting twists and the beast is so ridiculous it's laughable.
