Epic Movie Featuring Women's rights

Rahul Nag from London, England, 29th September, 2007

I saw this film in a cinema in Central London and it is an amazing film. Absolutely non-Bollywood so no singing and dancing and amazingly well researched. I call it epic because at the end of the film you really do feel like you have been on a journey and so enveloped in this teams' lives. If you have never seen an Indian film before I so strongly recommend this and if you have see this one as well. The film touches on so many social issues affecting women in India today from women expected to be subservient to men even in higher class families to their role in society as shown by the state of the women's team as well. However through it all it is an exciting film to watch. Plus you might just fall in love with hockey as well...

Not the usual Bollywood stuff..Much better!

P Ghargi from Reading, 2nd March, 2008

Bollywood Badshah,SRK gives a very good performance, jelling completely into the role of Indian women's hockey coach. The movie starts off, not on a promising note, sticking with tested formula( the hockey superstar and captain of Indian team who cannot do a thing wrong, misses the penalty shot against arch rivals, who else but Pakistan) and gets derided by the media and eventually becomes the target of public ire, and he disappears from the public eye, only to re-surface 6 years later to take on as coach for the women's team. The movie is all about how he inspires the women players to form a good team forgetting individual differences, and shows (albeit melodramatically by beating the best teams in he world to lift the World Cup) that hard work brings the best results. Good music score, especially the title song which whips up national feelings. Good performance by most of the girls who form the hockey team. The camarederie and the bickerings make forgood viewing. There are social cliches along the way,but bearable. Must-see, feel good movie.

meanigful entertainment

A Customer from Oxford, 2nd December, 2007

This movie is for anyone looking for the new, intelligent Bollywood movie makers.Inspiring, invigorating, and very meaningful entertainment from where you wouldn't normally expect it.Sharukh Khan excels, if only he would do more roles like this! The girls are brilliant, you could be forgiven for wondering, if they are actually actors or hockey players?

A nice change and a good watch

karanm83 from from Manchester, 15th February, 2008

Most non-Indians often think of Hindi movies as being monotonous storylines with couples dancing around trees and no real innovation. Sadly this has seemed to become true, and although recently more movies have been deviating from these old themes they have been copied off western films. This movie is a refreshing watch as it is a change and has not focussed on bringing in the best known actors and painting them as hero figures, but has portrayed a relatively unknown cast of actors as real people. Whilst not entirely original it does address many pertinent topics and helps bring about an awareness of the view people take on women's sport in India. Great watch from direction, acting, story and message - would highly reccommend.

Excellent!

Well I wasn't sure I could be engaged with a film about hockey but how wrong was I?! This film taught me a lot about the politics of India, through sport. With Shah Rukh you can be sure of a great film and he delivers. A great film about humanity and coming together really. Great music too.

Women's Rights & Sport - A nice change!

Kiran6 from , 16th July, 2009

A nice change to the standard romances that you may be getting bored of with Bollywood. This film takes you beyond human principles and touches on the issue of women's rights. A film about team work, women and hard work; something which isn't shown in a lot of films in Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan plays Kabir Khan, the hockey coach, very well. You would not think this is the same Shah Rukh Khan who plays soppy roles. More of an art film, this film doesn't have any dances - something of a good thing with this sort of a film. Background music however was excellent. The only bone to pick with this film is the fact that the storyline does drag a little midway and I did find my mind wandering at times. Besides this, it's a nice change from the usual Bollywood and I would recommend a watch.

Excellent!

kami from , 30th May, 2009

Not just because i am a shah rukh fan but it was pretty on the edge of your seat stuff. The matches were really good and most of it was pretty believable too. The girls were just your average girls from around India so was great to be able to see so many different characters tho some stereotypes about the districts that would inhabit certain girls! Good movie
