"The Celluloid Closet": Lest we forget

Perhaps slightly lost on today's audience. I first saw it in the 90s when it came out, I was still searching for depiction of queer life whilst in the process of discovering my own identity. At the time there was a renaissance of sorts, of the genre and the western world was about to be bombarded with new images in what would be termed by Time magazine 'The Gay Nineties'. To watch the film is to look back at cinema and take notice of the changes that have taken place in the last 80 odd years. A better quality of life as a sexual minority in our culture now, is a testament to the real changes in our society which are there depicted. It is a moving cinematic experience, a celebration of the evolution of queer images and portrayals in films and in their audiences. On top of that the narration by Lily Tomlin and interviews with such stars as Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg and Shirley MacLaine and such queer icons as Quentin Crisp, Harvey Fierstein and Susie Bright. It is thought provoking and moving in equal measure. I would recommend it to any age group and would add that it might be very beneficial to any young people who are discovering themselves and feeling the pressures of being different. Definitely worth a watch. Top marks from me.
